Step 1: Topic Selection

1. What is your topic? Give a brief overview.

Arab-Israeli Conflict. This is the struggle between the Palestinian and Israeli people fighting over control of Israel, the Gaza strip, and West Bank. There have been many peace attempts, but they have all failed.

2. Give two reasons why you selected this topic.

I selected this topic because this conflict has lasted for over 60 years and still hasn’t been resolved even though there have peace attempts. Another reason I selected this topic is because the Middle East in the world today is a hot bed for war, terrorism, and revolution. This is probably because of the history of the region.

3. To what specific course(s) does your topic relate? Explain.

This topic relates to History 12 because it occurred in the 20th century and was quite a big issue that never got resolved.

4. Determine whether the primary focus of the issue is cultural, resource, economic, environmental or political. Explain your decision.

The primary focus of this issue is cultural because of the contrasting religious beliefs of the Jews and Muslims. Both groups believe that the land they’re fighting for is holy land and that they must have control of it.

5. Recreate the following chart on a separate piece of paper. Using the following “K-W-L Organizer”, recall what you already know about your topic, organize any new ideas, ask questions and record your learning.

K: What I Know about the Topic

W: What I want to Know about the Topic

L: What I have Learned about the Topic from Preliminary Reading / Courses Studied

Israel was formed in 1948 after WW2 and instantly there were issues surrounding the Jews and Muslims. Peace agreements have not been able to be reached since the formation of the state.
I would like to know all the details about the conflict between these two groups. There could be a connection between all of the revolutions as of late.
Since the formation of Israel, there have been plenty of border skirmishes that have resulted in thousands of deaths.

6. Based on your prior knowledge and studies, what are three important themes or issues pertinent to this topic? Outline and explain.

Attempt at Peace-This is probably the most important issue because if a peace agreement could be reached then there wouldn’t be so many causalities.

Six Day War-This war increased Israel’s territory by 3 times its original size. Questions remain whether Israel attacked in aggression or defense.

Two State Solution-This means that Israel and Palestine would both be independent states and would be able to make decisions for themselves.

7. Create TWO controversial questions about the topic that your thesis paper may answer.

-Was Israel’s first strike in the Six Day War an act of aggression or a defensive preemptive strike?

-Who’s to blame for not agreeing to any of the peace treaties, Israel or Palestine?

8. Using the “Evaluating Internet Resources Criteria” found at the following website: http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/evaluating/Easyprint.html find 3 resources on your topic on the web that fit the criteria of a valid Internet resource.
